Simon Hope Vacuum System
Simon Hope has been designing, manufacturing, and supplying vacuum systems for woodturners since 2010. While the original system proved extremely effective, it was not compatible with every lathe and required a 10 mm hole through the headstock.
Drawing on more than a decade of experience and continuous development, this latest system incorporates a number of carefully considered design improvements. The result is a versatile, reliable, and competitively priced vacuum system designed specifically for the demands of modern woodturning.
Rotary Adaptor
The standard rotary adaptor is M33 x 3.5 to M20 x 2.5.
Additional adaptor options are available for:
-
1 1/4" x 8 to M20
-
1 1/2" x 6 to M20
-
1" x 8 to M20
-
M30 x 3.5 to M20
The shaft is machined from a single piece of stainless steel, providing excellent corrosion resistance. Vacuum systems can draw moisture from timber, which may otherwise cause internal components to rust over time.
The seals and bearing used to maintain the vacuum are industrially rated for speeds of up to 12,000 RPM. However, for operator safety and cooler running, we recommend a maximum operating speed of 1,000 RPM.
The connecting components are manufactured from engineering-grade acetal rather than aluminium. Although more expensive to produce, acetal offers several important advantages: it is exceptionally strong, moisture resistant, and provides a natural sealing action when the vacuum chucks are fitted. Unlike aluminium, it does not become uncomfortably cold in winter or readily develop condensation and surface pitting.
Most importantly, acetal helps manage heat effectively, allowing the rotary unit to operate cooler and promoting longer service life.
Safety Bar & Cone
The integrated safety bar and cone securely locks the stationary section of the rotary system in position. This helps prevent the vacuum tube from catching and rotating around the shaft—a problem that can occur with other vacuum systems.
Vacuum Chucks
The vacuum chucks are machined from solid acetal, providing excellent stability and durability. The material remains comfortable to handle in colder conditions and is resistant to condensation.
Acetal also makes it easy to shave or trim the front edge of the chuck when replacing worn neoprene seals.
Reference lines on the sides of the chucks make it easier to accurately reposition and align partially turned bowls.
Both chucks feature an M20 x 2.5 thread and screw directly onto the rotary adaptor.
Please note: These chucks differ from the M33 x 3.5 vacuum chucks available separately for customers building their own vacuum systems.
The kit now includes the chuck extender.
Vacuum Gauge & Controls
The vacuum gauge is supplied in a wall-mounted configuration as standard, providing clear and reliable vacuum readings during operation.
Fitments for the KS XL and Stratos 230 are also available from the relevant options.
A bleed valve allows precise adjustment of the vacuum level and makes it easy to release the vacuum when repositioning or changing the workpiece.
An air-trap filter captures moisture, oil, and debris drawn through the system, helping to protect the vacuum pump and maintain reliable performance.
THIS KIT DOES NOT INCLUDE A VACUUM PUMP AND WOULD REQUIRE YOU TO PURCHASE ONE TO USE WITH THE SYSTEM.
